"Prince was known to push boundaries and constantly reinvent himself while staying true to who he was as an artist. “The Truth” is a song and album, released in 1998, that speaks to the themes of love, growth, spirituality, and emotions. I am inspired by his words and have often asked myself what I stand for. Through this portrait, I aim to capture the essence of Prince and the way he showed up as his most authentic self in every regard while teaching us all a little something."

My name is Makala Aayana (she, her, hers). I am a Caribbean-American, multi-disciplinary artist, engineer, and podcast host, born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and currently based in Durham, North Carolina. I have been practicing as a part-time artist for 2 years but I have been creative ever since I could hold a crayon. In my art practice, I explore different mediums. Through them all, I am inspired by the interactions, conversations, and community connections that I’ve experienced in my life and noticed in the lives of others. Lately, I have mostly been working with acrylics and digitally via procreate. I am passionate about wellness, slow living, and sustainability. I keep sustainability in mind with every creation. Art is my means to connect with the world and healthily channel my emotions.
