No Pain by Hyewon Jin Grigoni

'No Pain' is a response to the late 80's-early 90’s gym rat slogan of ‘No Pain, No Gain.’ I worked at a health club in high school and remember these burly men in loose tank tops with big font, thinking at the time, “ok, we get it, you’re manly.”

‘No Pain’ is a reflection on the option to choose the way of peace and less suffering. Sort of a counter to (perhaps) a feminine tendency to be a martyr, to suffer for the benefit of others. It is a nod to our wounds, a calling to avail ourselves to healing.

Hyewon Grigoni is a Durham-based artist who has engaged in a variety of creative practices since childhood. Her work and writing have appeared in art shows, in print, and on air for public radio. Her current solo exhibition can be seen at the Durham Arts Council through May 12.

Hyewon believes that art, like good writing or good religion, can comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Her work aims to achieve a little of both in equal measure
