FU032 What Once Was by Tracey Chipps

FU032 What Once Was by Tracey Chipps

35" x 12"

I excitedly started painting this floral piece in beautiful hues of purples. I had exactly what I wanted to create defined very clearly in my mind. For whatever reason, I just couldn’t get the paints to blend nicely, I couldn’t find the proper placement for the flowers and stems. The harder I tried the more of a disaster I saw blooming before my eyes. I quit. I stuffed the unfinished piece out of view behind old canvases in my office. I didn’t want to be reminded of the frustrating failure. Fast forward to a few months later. I experienced an unwanted romantic break up that was simply soul crushing. At some point during this time of mourning the lost relationship I pulled out the castaway art and started again. This time, things came easier. This time, I created as I went along having no expectations. What unfolded was a resurrection of an abandoned piece of art and a tribute to the abandoned relationship.

What Once Was is a reflection of a relationship that held many beautiful moments, laughter, adventures, bonding experiences, self awareness and growth. The monochromatic nature of this piece is symbolic of the past, something that no longer exists. A ghostlike memory of what was. The shimmer of the metallic paint serve as a poignant reminder of the joy that relationship once held. It’s still somewhat eff’d up. So was the break up.
