I spent months on this painting, a mixed-media diptych that flopped, but not for lack of trying. The bird silhouettes were painstakingly traced from photographs and transferred onto a kind of clay that I carved laboriously into stamps that held paint. The silvery branch was traced from a small fallen tree I picked up on the side of the yard belonging to local music legend Laura Ballance—I stuffed her discarded tree into the trunk of my car. The city scene was photographed from the window of my ex-boyfriend’s apartment in Brooklyn. It would be news to him that he was ever my boyfriend. Hence the title of this work. The birds finally found freedom, as did I. That purply night sky color is fabulous, though!

Wendy Hower has been making art ever since she could hold a paintbrush and her Grandma Jane Green gave her a watercolor pad with paints in tubes. When her Grandma Jane Hower brought her “magic markers,” 6-year-old Wendy shook them out and looked for magic inside the empty box. She believes anyone can make art and “artist” does not require a capital A. Past career chapters include newspaper journalism and art museum marketing. These days, Wendy is working with Liberty Arts, which is growing into a community arts center in downtown Durham. She lives in Durham with her husband, three cats and a dog; her grown children live nearby.
