Sometimes you spend a long time carving out the perfect collage pieces, but it’s the scraps left behind that piece together a story. This piece began as play, with plans for a grid of long, glued-down trimmings. But I started to see something architectural, city-like, and peeled up paper to adjust—leaving an unintended streak of paper and glue right in the center. I was going to cover it up, but the stripe had energy, a connection, from ground to sky. So I repeated the glueing and peeling several times. Now I see some kind of inextricable force or idea that the colorful world is built around. The collaged city itself grew past the intended left edge. This piece feels like a story that erupted. To keep that impression of surprise and raw inspiration, I decided to leave on the spiral-binding-bitten edge still on it.

India Lassiter (any pronouns) embroiders, collages, takes photos, and writes. He believes people long to make art the way birds long to sing, without need for justification or gatekeeping. India is rediscovering visual art outside of her day job, focusing on intuitive discovery over planning. Their pieces range from found poetry to abstract embroidery to surreal collage, visible at @leafpockets on Instagram. They have lived most of their life in North Carolina.
India celebrates her mother Diana (1961–2004) for teaching both imagination and practicality to her as a child, because sometimes “street gems” are shards of glass, but sometimes too the inside pattern of a junk mail envelope is a map to a new world.
