So, "Bubble Boy" was my first shot at making a relief print based on a few photos I took of young boys playing with bubbles. I was really excited to start carving, but when I went to transfer my sketch onto the block, it didn’t come out quite right. I was pretty disappointed, but I couldn’t just scrap the materials, so I tried filling in the areas that didn’t transfer. It wasn’t as clean as I wanted—some edges weren’t as crisp, and I made a few carving mistakes that really bugged me. Honestly, I was ready to call it a loss.
But during one last attempt to make the best of it, I reminded myself why I started doing these relief prints in the first place—to create something different from the direct reality I capture in my photos. I wanted to make something that didn’t have to be “perfect.” So, I pushed through, made a few adjustments, and—boom—it ended up becoming one of my favorite prints I’ve ever made. It was a great reminder that perfection isn’t the goal—persistence and passion are what really matter.
