The F*ck up of this series is the time in which it took me to make it. I had the idea in 2022 and quickly started this first painting. I wanted to challenge myself to paint smaller as my space was limited and cute, little, works are easier to ship. However, then I got sidetracked on a frame I found for free on Facebook marketplace. It was 8 feet long, not the idea, but such a great deal! I did not intend for the series to take me 3 years.

I painted “Smothered” next because the idea was straightforward and sticky. The rest of the set came slowly and I began to only have one conversation bit. I got the nickname Waffles at my workout group. My favorite is “Chunked”, a chunky baby with chunky bits, not entirely satisfied with his meal. 

I have to create rules and guidelines to make work because a blank canvas is the most terrifying thing in the world. Forcing myself to paint small tightened my compositions and redo smaller portions a few times. There were moments when I did not think the series was working and was tempted to scrap it. However, the idea required that I illustrate each hashbrown option on the menu. I could not stop until they each had their moment.

The experience just goes to show, you can find motivation and a good idea in the most unlikely of places, including a fast-food menu.

McKenzie Peterson is an artist working in North Carolina for 4 years now. A native of Texas and Georgia, she lives cautiously north of the 36th parallel, where snow is rare, but not impossible. She has studied art nearly her entire life with the most recent endeavor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art in Athens, Georgia. Her work captures moments of light, color, and vitality, often inspired by nature. She is fascinated by intimate experiences in average places, in part, her motivation for the art series of 9 paintings set in Waffle House called Scattered!
