Catherine Coan, from Montana via Los Angeles, is an artist, writer, and professor living and working in Chapel Hill. Her imaginary creatures perch on human furniture in domestic spaces, asking the viewer to engage with the animal inside.

Her work happens at the intersection of death and delight, thus is rich in irony, punning, and other metaphor. She has shown in prestigious galleries across the US, with notable celebrities among her collectors. She was a judge on the AMC taxidermy/art television series Immortalized.
