When I go back to my childhood home, it feels small. Driving into the cul-de-sac I wonder how we managed to find the space to play basketball, street hockey, and scooter every summer. The front door handle is no longer a stretch for me to grab and the ceilings feel much too low. I cherish this complicated feeling, as I understand this house will be for sale, and I won’t have a reason to drive into this hidden little cul-de-sac anymore.

McKayla Walker is an a painter and illustrator residing in Cary, North Carolina. Following the path of surrealist artists, her work is found to be a natural response to the cultural and economic uplift brought upon by the Covid-19 pandemic. McKayla’s work is influenced by theories of psychoanalysis, exploring the subconscious and hidden memories to reveal a dream-like escape. Using elements of funky symbolism and bold brushstrokes, she intuitively to create an ever-unfolding work of art into a story.

With a background in non-profit arts organizations and marketing, McKayla finds inspiration through her community and working alongside artists from the Durham Art Guild, an organization dedicated to finding opportunities and engagement for artists. Her work offers transparency in the ways of development with formal elements and simple colors to spark conversation and inspire new methods to her audience.
